No More Slingbox in Two Years

November 11, 2020

For those that don't know, Slingbox is a device that allows you to stream your TV/DVR content over the internet. You can watch the content on your laptop, tablet and even your mobile phone. Think of it as putting an extra long cable on your TV set. The device allows you to get around any local blackout rules for local sporting events. I love my Slingbox and use it primarily to watch premium content whenever I'm not home, especially NFL games on Sunday Ticket. I was so bummed out to learn that the Slingbox servers will be shut down in November 2022.

Engadget also posted the news and mentioned that there may be a way to continue Slingbox use after the servers are taken offline. We may have an option for a DNS workaround to directly connect to your Slingbox. Another item for my to-do-list is to get the sniffer out and analyze the connection traffic to my Slingbox. That will be the first step to see if it's even possible to directly connect. I'm hoping there will be some alternatives that surface within the next two years to allow my TV streaming to continue.
