Stop Annoying Video Conferencing Participants – Learn Proper Etiquette

May 21, 2020

Let's face it…COVID-19 has caused an explosive growth in the use of video conferencing. From Zoom to Webex to GoToMeeting to Google Meet to (God forbid) Facebook's Messenger Rooms, many users just don't know how to act during a video conference call. CNET has a post that identifies 6 ways participants are annoying coworkers during a video call. It lists the six annoying practices as:

  1. Typing or otherwise being noisy while not on mute
  2. Eating, drinking or smoking
  3. Looking at your phone or laptop
  4. Leaving the frame without explaining why
  5. Keeping the camera at a weird angle
  6. Figuring out the tech while on the call

I'm sure that are more than six annoyances as we've all observed. There is some good news though. CNET also lists some tactics to help improve the video conference experience.

  • Look and sound sharp online
  • Look attentive
  • Practice active listening

All good advice. One of my suggestions is to look at the camera while you are speaking. Turning your head, looking down or otherwise not facing the camera tells me you aren't really invested in the discussion. My two cents.
