iPhone Users – Scam to Sell Your Stolen/Lost iPhone

As more and more of our digital lives are stored in our mobile devices, it can be a traumatic experience to lose our smartphones. There are some particularly good features built into modern smartphones to prevent theft. As an example, you’ll need credentials for the Apple ID associated with an iPhone in order to access the device. Lifehacker has a post describing the latest attempts to take control of your iPhone. If you don’t have the information about the Apple ID, the stolen device is nothing more than an electronic brick.

Basically, someone contacts you after you’ve lost your iPhone pretending to be a good Samaritan wanting to return it to you. They want you to remove the association of the device to your Apple ID in order to protect your data privacy. DON’T DO IT! Removing the Apple ID will allow them to access your stored data and sell the device on the open market. Keeping the Apple ID association protects the stolen iPhone and prevents anybody else from using it. Don’t fall for the scam.
