Recent LastPass Problems Lock Users from Their Own Passwords
January 21, 2020
It was not a good weekend for some LastPass users. The Register reported that LastPass suffered a system outage last Friday that carried through the weekend. Apparently, the password manager had secured the passwords so well that users couldn't even access them. As is typical for such events, social media blew up. LastPass failed to acknowledge that some users couldn't access their password vaults. After some time, there was an admission that some users were having a problem. For some reason the local database copy didn't help users. Finally, LastPass submitted a statement about the problem.
"After a thorough investigation, we have determined it was the result of a bug in a recent release and was limited to a very small set of users (a fraction of a percent of our user base). This has been resolved and all services are now functional. There is no user action needed. As always, delivering a reliable and secure service for our users is top priority, and we will continue to respond and fix reports as quickly as possible."
Expectedly, there are all sorts of comments about alternatives to LastPass. While cloud password managers like LastPass are very popular, my preference is to use one that isn't dependent on connectivity and uses a local copy of the encrypted vault.
