Chrome Warns if Your Password is Part of a Data Breach

December 11, 2019

Sorry to say that it appears data breaches are now a way of life. It seems like we hear about a breach at least once a week if not more often. Google has been warning users about reused passwords discovered in data breaches via a browser add-in or a password checkup tool. Google will now include the password checking ability natively in the Chrome browser rolling out with version 79.

As The Verge reports, "You can control this new functionality in the sync settings in Chrome, and Google is using strongly hashed and encrypted copies of passwords to match them using multiple layers of encryption. This allows Google to securely match passwords using a technique called private set intersection with blinding."
