Expose Hidden Passwords in Your Browser

December 9, 2019

First, please don't instruct your browser to save your logon credentials. It's easy and convenient, but you probably don't remember what the password is. There's also the possibility that your passwords can be accessed by other connections to your computer or a browser add-in. It is far better to use a password manager to store and retrieve your credentials.

If you are looking to "extract" your saved passwords to enter into a password manager or just want to expose what they are, Lifehacker has the steps to follow. Things might look a little different between various browsers, but the process is essentially the same.

  • Right-click (or CTRL + click) the password box and select "Inspect Element." This brings up the developer console.
  • On the line that starts with "input type=password" change the word "password" to "text." You may need to double-click to make the field editable. This will reveal your password.
