New Service to “Read” License Agreements

November 21, 2019

You may have heard of the DoNotPay service that helps you contest parking tickets and even sue people. It has now launched a new tool called Do Not Sign that uses machine learning to highlight clauses it thinks users need to know about, including options to opt out from data collection. According to a report by The Verge, the service is included with DoNotPay's monthly $3 subscription fee, and it lets users upload, scan, or copy and paste the URLs of any license agreements they'd like to check. Joshua Browder, the founder and CEO of DoNotPay, developed Do Not Sign after he basically got screwed by Planet Fitness.

Shocker. When Facebook's terms of service was scanned, Do Not Sign highlighted six issues. Google's terms state that it can stop its services at any time. Do Not Sign pointed out that you can request your personal data from Apple and ask it to delete the data. It looks like the Do Not Sign service will help bring a little more transparency to what users are agreeing to. Perhaps some of the warning alerts will get you to change your mind about signing up.
