The Answer to the USB Confusion – USB4

March 5, 2019

Last week, I wrote about the confusing mess created by the USB-IF with the announcement and branding of the USB 3.2 specification. As they say…timing is everything. You may own a device that has a Thunderbolt 3 connection. Thunderbolt 3 has been called “the USB-C that does it all” providing data transfer, charging, video connection, etc. Intel owns the proprietary specification for Thunderbolt 3, but promised to make it royalty-free. The USB Promoter Group announced that Intel has given them the Thunderbolt specification for free to be included in the new USB4 rollout. Details of the USB4 specification still need to be ironed out, but incorporating Thunderbolt 3 will help with the USB confusion. Thunderbolt was expensive and mass distribution of the USB4 specification promises to make high speed connectivity more affordable.
