Time to Get Rid of Adobe’s Flash: Even Senator Wyden Says So

July 30, 2018

I am a big fan of Senator Ron Wyden, who seems to be a very tech savvy member of Congress. On July 25th, he sent a letter asking officials from three government agencies (the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST), the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)) to come up with a process to govern the removal of Adobe Flash content from all government agencies by August 1, 2019. Adobe's Flash end-of-life date is scheduled for the end of 2020, after which there will be no technical support for the software.

As Wyden points out, Flash now has "serious, largely unfixable cybersecurity issues" – and it is still receiving support!

Wyden is trying to avoid a fiasco like the one the federal government had with Windows XP, which government agencies still use in spite of the fact that Microsoft retired the operating system back in 2014. Hey, what's four years, right?

You can read Wyden's letter here.
