Can You Wear a White Hat and Be a Zero-Day Exploit Millionaire?

April 19, 2012

Hat tip to friend and co-author Dave Ries, who reminded me after reading yesterday's post that you can be "into" zero-day exploits but make money while wearing a white hat. And Dave should know, because his son Chris has amassed a fair amount of money by discovering vulnerabilities and reporting them to various programs that reward bug hunters.

One of the most famous is the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). You can find a more complete list of other programs here.

You can even sell your knowledge to defense contractors. You might make more money on the black market, of course, but then you may have some 'splaining to do on Judgment Day. I, for one, wish to do as little 'splaining on that day as possible!
