Manafort Lawyers Botch Redactions, Reveal Details of Alleged Trump Contacts

January 9, 2019

My oh my, where have we seen this movie before? Law.com (sub.req.) reported on January 8th that defense lawyers for Paul Manafort denied that the onetime Trump campaign chairman lied to prosecutors about his contact with the Trump administration, broadly contesting special counsel Robert Mueller’s claim that Manafort violated his plea deal.

In court papers made public yesterday, defense lawyers said prosecutors were overblowing a text message exchange cited as proof that Manafort tried to mislead investigators probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Manafort’s defense lawyers intended to black out the reference to the text exchange. But that portion of the filing, submitted under seal Monday, was improperly redacted in the version made public Tuesday, allowing the text to be lifted from the document with a few keystrokes.

Redaction isn't all that hard but boy, the failure to properly redact seems to crop up frequently.

You can read all about it, including the filing from Manafort's attorneys yesterday, in the story. To no one's surprise, Mueller's office declined to comment.
