Securing Your Mobile Devices While Travelling

June 5, 2018

As a follow-up to last week's post on the New York City Bar's ethics opinion for attorneys crossing the U.S. border with client data, there are more resources (thank you Dave Ries) to consider.

First is US-CERT's post on Holiday Traveling with Personal Internet-Enabled Devices (revised June 2017). A couple of tips there which I often see ignored:

  • Turn off Bluetooth when not in use.
  • Be cautious when charging your mobile device connecting to a charging station that you do not control.

Second is US-CERT's International Mobile Safety Tips (revised October 2016), which has a nice bulleted list of tips in plain English.

Note that these are not meant for system admins who have far more complicated things to manage, but for everyday travelers who want to know how to travel safely.

It seems the words "travel safely" have more than one meaning these days!
