U.S. Businessman Videos Chinese Misbehavior in His Hotel Room

March 4, 2013

I wish I had all the information about this story – a portion is known to me by a friend I trust implicitly and there has been some online verification. My friend actually saw this video, presented in a law enforcement briefing, and showing presumably Chinese authorities entering the hotel room of a U.S. businessman visiting China after he had departed his room. After he had left, the cleaning crew came in followed by two other people.

Those people rifled through the businessman's papers and took photos. They also inserted what appears to be a flash drive in his laptop. It is impossible to know whether they were able to install spyware on the laptop or to download files since I don't have access to all of the facts. But I'm pretty sure they were doing one or the other. I'd bet on the spyware if a wager were to be laid.

The FBI has been showing the video to security professionals to heighten their awareness of what is going on in China these days. It's one thing to know it intellectually – but quite another to see it.

Hat tip to . . . my friend.
