JOHN SIMEK CO-AUTHORS ABA GPSOLO MAGAZINE ARTICLE
June 10, 2014
In the May/June 2014 edition of GPSolo magazine, published by the American Bar Association, John Simek is a co-author of the article titled, “More Than a Locked Door: Law Firm Security”. His co-authors were legal technologists Natalie Kelly and Dan Siegel.
In the past, law firm security consisted of making sure the doors were locked at the end of the workday. Today there is so much more to consider when it comes to security. This article provides details that need to be put in place for both an in-office and mobile technology security plan within a law firm.
Some of the topics that are covered are encryption, wireless and virtual networks and office policies. All firms should adopt and implement comprehensive IT policies for all forms of technology used in the firm.
Additional topics include how to deal with spam, making sure that individual users are creating secure passwords and confirming that they comply with office security protocols. The proper usage of laptops, phones, tablets and policies for these mobile devices is also discussed.
Finally, data backup is a necessity. At some point the law firm will need to restore data due to a lost file, deleted data, hard drive failure or even a virus.
Security is an ethical obligation for attorneys who need to keep client information confidential.
