JOHN SIMEK IS QUOTED IN THE MARCH 2014 “ABA JOURNAL”

John Simek is quoted in an article from the ABA Journal titled:  Microsoft is ending XP support in April; Windows 7 and 8 await.

April 8th is the day that Microsoft will end support for the Windows XP operating system which can leave users vulnerable to new security breaches.  Mr. Simek is quoted as saying,  “I’m not sure what amount of effort is being exerted in trying to discover new flaws in XP for future exploit, but I don’t think it is nearly as big as what some report. Having said that, I do believe that there will be attempts to compromise XP systems after the security updates stop.”

According to the International Legal Technology Association in a 2012 survey the twelve year old Windows XP product is still in use at 37 percent of law firms.  The hackers are out there and preparing for the April deadline so law firms need to protect their client’s privacy and need to make preparations for compliance issues.  John Simek says,  “Some states may consider an attorney’s continued use of XP to be a violation of their ethical duties and potentially subject to disciplinary action…”
