SHARON NELSON COMMENTS ON WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

May 13, 2014

In an article titled, “Where Is Your Data When You Wear It” published in the May 2014 edition ofLaw Technology News, Ms. Nelson comments about the dangers of wearable devices.

Google Glass is one of the newest forms of wearable technology that has been in the news recently and Ms. Nelson is quoted as saying, “We have already heard anecdotally that some law firms are banning Google Glass.”

Wearable electronic revenue is expected to triple in the years leading up to 2016, from $1.6 billion to $5 billion.  There are no notable cases to date where a hacker has used a wearable device to an entry point to infiltrate an internal network, but the possibility is there.

Sharon Nelson recommends that firms using wearable devices should make sure data is encrypted.  The Wi-Fi should be encrypted with WPA2 (WiFi Protected Access 2), and Bluetooth should be disabled on law firm devices when they are not in use.  Bluesnarfing, or stealing information through the Bluetooth connection, will likely become more common as the wearable devices become more prevalent in our society.
