Android Users – Backup Your SMS Text Messages

August 22, 2019

We have three core functions here at Sensei – Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Digital Forensics. Our digital forensics group receives multiple requests each week asking about recovering deleted text messages. Apparently, folks want to retrieve information they have deleted, presumably for a legal purpose. To be honest, we get spouses and significant others wanting to get back deleted text messages after a relationship goes sour. Even if the request is legally valid (not all are), it would be cheaper for the user if they had backed up their text messages and could just restore from backup.

Android Police has a post that describes how to backup your SMS text messages. The good news is that you may already have a built-in method to back up SMS text messages. Review the post to make sure you have properly configured the backup. There are also several third-party apps to backup the text messages on your Android device. Hopefully, you are running a current version of Android and can use the built-in capability. Just make sure it is properly configured before you need to restore the data.
