Delay Windows 10 Update Versions

May 28, 2019

A lot of people complained about problems with the Windows 10 1809 upgrade, which Microsoft had to withdraw due to serious errors. The normal process is that Microsoft will deliver the Windows 10 1903 update to systems running the current version of Windows 10 for at least 30 days. If you are running Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education (not the Home version), you have the ability to delay the installation of the operating system upgrade.

The process assumes you are already running Windows 10 1809. Go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Advanced Options. The first option allows you to choose a servicing channel (previously called a branch). The default setting is Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted), which corresponds to what was previously known as the Current Branch. The second option allows you to select the delay period (from 0 to 365 days). The third option works independently of the feature update settings and allows you to defer the monthly cumulative security updates and any additional out-of-band updates by up to 30 days.
