Don’t Have Wi-Fi 6? Wi-Fi 7 on the Books

September 4, 2019

Technology changes so fast. Don't like what you see today? Wait a bit and it will change. Wi-Fi network connectivity is no exception. Wi-Fi 6 is just rolling out and there is already talk about Wi-Fi 7. Devices such as the Galaxy Note 10 support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with speeds four times Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). CNET has some of the details, but engineers are already talking about Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be). Improvements to Wi-Fi 6 will come in three phases with speeds increasing along the way. Wi-Fi 7 is expected to debut in 2024 as the third improvement to Wi-Fi 6.

CNET's tests show that Wi-Fi 6 is capable of achieving a maximum of 1.3Gbps. The expectation is that Wi-Fi 7 will hit the 30Gbps mark. That's a lot of data steaming through the airwaves. Time will tell how effectively vendors will be at delivering reliable Wi-Fi 6 and 7 devices. I would rather see a more secure environment using WPA3 before being able to stream 4K video through the air.
