DuckDuckGo Browser for Mac

April 13, 2022

DuckDuckGo is known for its privacy focused search engine and browser app for Android and iOS. We’ve been waiting for the actual browser to land on a desktop system. The Verge reports that the DuckDuckGo browser is now available in beta form for Mac. However, you will have to get on a waiting list in order to participate. Unsurprisingly, the browser uses the DuckDuckGo search engine by default. It also automatically blocks web trackers and includes technology to deal with those annoying cookie consent pop-ups.

The browser is not a reworked version of an existing browser such as Chrome. It is built off of WebKit, the rendering engine used used by Safari. DuckDuckGo’s senior director of product, Beah Burger-Lenehan, stated, “Beyond rendering, all the code is ours — written by DuckDuckGo engineers with privacy, security, and simplicity front of mind. This means we don’t have the cruft and clutter that has accumulated in browsers over the years, both in code and design, giving you a modern look and feel and a faster speed.”

In order to get on the waitlist, The Verge states, “To join the waitlist for the browser, download (or update) the DuckDuckGo app on mobile. Then head to Settings and select the DuckDuckGo for Desktop option from the Privacy section. You’ll have to wait to receive a notification from the app, which will contain an invite code and link you can use to download the browser on your Mac.”
