Google Supporting RSS Again?
May 20, 2021
Those of us that have been around awhile remember the sad day when Google killed the RSS reader called Google Reader. Perhaps new life is coming to the RSS feed. The Verge reported Google is experimenting with a new Chrome feature on Android devices to “follow” sites. The new feature is based on RSS. Currently, the testing is only available for selected US users of Chrome Canary. “Users will be able to follow sites from the browser menu, and updates will be aggregated in a card-based feed that’s shown when users open a new tab. It’s not clear whether this feed is wholly dependent on sites providing RSS support, or if Google will fill in the gaps itself.”
We’ll have to see if Google ultimately embraces RSS again and officially adds RSS type function in Chrome. RSS feeds are a great way to get near-real-time updates of information sources.
