Latest iOS Update Supports Hardware Keys

January 25, 2023

You should have a second factor (2FA) configured for access to ALL accounts and services. Using an SMS text message is the most common method for getting that second factor. While text messages for 2FA are better than not having anything at all, it is the least secure of the MFA methods. It is more secure to use an authentication app for code generation or push notifications. Even more secure is to use a hardware key such as the YubiKey. iOS users now have such an option.

The Verge reported that Apple now supports the usage of hardware keys with the iOS 16.3 update. You can now protect your Apple ID with a physical key. Apple stated, “Security Keys for Apple ID allow users to strengthen the security of their account by requiring a physical security key as part of the two factor authentication sign in process on new devices.”
