Live Transcription Coming to Microsoft Teams
March 25, 2021
First it was Google Meet and then Webex and then Zoom. As reported by ZDNet, next up to get live transcription is Microsoft Teams. The live transcription captures audio in “nearly real time” and identifies the speaker during a meeting. Microsoft’s Shalendra Chhabra, the lead on conversational AI for Microsoft Teams meetings said, “Delivering live transcription with high accuracy, minimal latency, and cost efficiency at enterprise scale has been one of the toughest challenges in the industry. Over the last two years we’ve made significant strides in solving this problem and have dramatically improved our models for accuracy using meeting context in real time and cutting edge AI.”
Live transcription is essentially closed captioning without requiring a human and is “powered” by artificial intelligence. Those hearing impaired meeting participants particularly appreciate the live transcription feature. Google Meet was one of the first to offer live transcription. Webex has upped the game and even uses live transcription to provide language translations. Zoom now has live transcriptions and limited availability for users of the free version. The live transcription feature is primarily for Microsoft enterprise customers. You will need to be subscribed to Microsoft 365 E3, Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium in order to take advantage of the new feature.
