Manually Update Zoom for Mac – Now

August 16, 2022

It is imperative that we keep our technology up to date and patched to protect against discovered vulnerabilities. The Verge reported that a security researcher discovered a flaw in Zoom’s Mac software that would allow an attacker access to the whole operating system. The vulnerability exists in the actual Zoom installer application, which “needs to run with special user permissions in order to install or remove the main Zoom application from a computer.”

Zoom has been working on a fix since it was first notified of the vulnerability back in December 2021 by Mac security specialist Patrick Wardle at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas. Apparently, a fix from Zoom exposed a different problem. Wardle is frustrated at the amount of time to provide a fix. “To me that was kind of problematic because not only did I report the bugs to Zoom, I also reported mistakes and how to fix the code. So it was really frustrating to wait, what, six, seven, eight months, knowing that all Mac versions of Zoom were sitting on users’ computers vulnerable.” Even so, you should manually update the Zoom application on your Mac to get the latest release.
