More Secure DNS Requests for Firefox

February 26, 2020

Security awareness has increased by leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Browsers have been consistently implementing technologies to improve security and protect the privacy of the user. There have been a lot of reports about Firefox jumping the gun ahead of Chrome and implementing secure DNS queries. The Hacker News reported that Firefox has now enabled DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) by default for all U.S. users. This default action will send all DNS requests to the Cloudflare DNS servers instead of any DNS server configured in the router, operating system or ISP.

If Mozilla intended the change to be automatic, it certainly didn't work for me. My default DNS setting were not changed. I had to manually go in and make the changes. If it didn't change for you either, just click on the hamburger icon in the upper right of the browser and select Options. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on the Settings button in the Network Settings section. Check the box for Enable DNS over HTTPS and Use Provider Cloudflare. Don't forget to click the OK button to save the changes.
