Move Saved Passwords Between Browsers

July 14, 2020

Even though browsers can save login passwords for you, it is a feature you shouldn't use. A separate password manager is a far more secure solution and gives you much more flexibility in storing all of your logon credentials. Having said that, we know many of you will still save passwords in a browser. Perhaps it is laziness or convenience. No matter what the reason, there will come a time when you will want to change your browser of choice and would like to migrate your passwords over. Bleeping Computer has a post detailing how to import and backup passwords in the Chrome browser. The instructions don't just deal with saving Chrome passwords. You can also import bookmarks and settings from another browser such as Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer or a plain old bookmarks HTML file.

You can also export the passwords to a CSV file. If you decide to go that route, remember that your passwords will be exposed in clear text. Import the data quickly into another browser (or move it to another machine if you are not syncing them to your Google account) and destroy the file. You can also use the export function to expose a password you can't remember instead of using the "forgot password" feature of the website.
