No More FTP Support for Future Firefox Versions

March 24, 2020

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is still used by some to transfer files over the internet. Browsers have traditionally supported FTP, but that is changing. According to a Naked Security report, Firefox will stop supporting FTP sometime this summer when version 77 is released. Users will have the option to temporarily enable FTP from within the browser.

FTP has long been known to be an insecure protocol. As the post stated, "There are more secure versions of FTP available. SSH FTP uses the secure shell protocol for FTP sessions, which is encrypted. FTP over TLS (FTPS) runs the protocol over SSL/TLS. However, Mozilla seems uninterested in supporting these." It looks like we're all headed to a stand-alone piece of software if we want to continue using FTP or other secure transfer methods like SFTP.
