NordVPN User? – Consider a Change

October 23, 2019

If you haven't heard yet, NordVPN disclosed that there was a data breach which compromised at least one of its servers. So what really happened? The Hacker News has a summary of some to the details surrounding the breach. The bad news is that the attackers did manage to steal at least three TLS encryption keys used to protect the data transmission of VPN users. Not a good thing.

NordVPN protects user's transmissions so they don't keep any activity logs. That's a good and bad thing. It's good because a user's activity is pretty much kept private. It's a bad thing because NordVPN is now hampered in determing what really happened in the breach. Should you be worried? Maybe. Apparently, VPN providers TorGuard and VikingVPN were also hacked. That doesn't mean you should stop using a VPN. Perhaps you should just use a different provider for a short period of time.
