Own a Dell Computer? Update it Now!

May 5, 2021

Dell is a huge supplier of computers. It doesn’t matter if you are using a laptop, desktop, tablet or even a gaming machine. There’s a pretty high probability it is a computer manufactured by Dell. A very high priority these days is to make sure we are securely using technology and protecting ourselves from cyber attacks. ThreatPost reported that there are hundreds of millions of Dell computers that are vulnerable to a privilege escalation bug that has existed since 2009. SentinelLabs discovered five high severity flaws in Dell’s firmware update driver and posted the technical details if you are interested.

The question most readers will want to ask is “Is my Dell computer at risk?” To help answer that question, Dell has posted a listing of over 300 impacted models. The remediation steps are also included in the post. Essentially, the fix is to delete the dbutil_2_3.sys driver. The simplest way to find the driver and delete it is by running the Dell Security Advisory Update – DSA-2021-088 utility. The utility will scan your system and any instance of the driver. You will then be prompted to delete the driver if found.
