Phishing Coming to a Cell Phone Near You
October 14, 2021
It’s bad enough when a phishing email slips through your email security systems and lands in your Inbox. Let it never be said that cybercriminals are not creative. Besides trending Netflix’s Squid Game, delivering phishing attacks via text messaging is a recent craze. BGR has a post warning about scam text messages targeting Verizon customers.
“In recent days, Verizon customers have been receiving texts that appear to be part of a new phishing campaign. The unsolicited messages tell the subscribers that as a reward for paying their September bills, they are receiving a gift. What follows is an incredibly suspicious link to an unknown website. If you fall for this scam and click the link, you might be asked to share your personal information, like your name, address, phone number, and social security number.”
It’s not just Verizon. A colleague relayed that his wife received a similar text message from AT&T. The bad news is that she clicked on the link and has seen a significant increase of phishing attacks since then. For those that don’t know, phishing attacks via text are called smishing. Get it? Phishing vis SMS text equals smishing.
