Should You Defrag Your Solid State Drive?
February 2, 2023
We are all interested in increasing the performance of our computers. One method is to speed up the retrieval of data from the computer hard drive. Putting all the segments of a file together on a disk means the read head can sequentially read the data instead of spending more time “jumping” around the drive assembling all the portions of the file. The process of putting all the files pieces together in a sequential manner is called defragmentation. As more and more computers are now equipped with SSDs and not spinning disks, is defragmentation necessary?
The answer is NO as explained in a How-To Geek post. In fact, it is not a good idea to even defrag your SSD. Better ways to improve your SSD performance are:
- Trimming
- Overprovisioning
- Keeping the drive clean
