Should You Put Your Desktop Computer on the Floor?
February 17, 2022
What type of computer do you use? While more users prefer the mobility of a laptop, desktop and tower computers tend to cost less money. If you use a desktop computer, can you put it on the floor and free up some desk real estate? How-To Geek has the answer to your question.
The key consideration is air flow. Sufficient air is needed to keep the electronics from overheating. A carpeted floor can increase dust, which may impede air flow. You can always place your desktop on a board placed on the carpet to help keep the dust level down. There is more dust, hair, foreign materials, etc. on the floor as well. You may need to vacuum or use compressed air to clear materials from the computer’s cooling fan. Basically, putting your computer on the floor is fine.
We do a lot of analysis on computers and see all kinds of “yucky” environments inside a computer case. By far, the worst ones are those computer users that have cats as pets. The cats like the warmth of the computer and tend to rest on top of the computer. The cat dander collects and clogs the computer cooling fan. Make sure you vacuum out the cat dander on a periodic basis before you burn up the electronics.
