Thunderbolt 4 Coming Soon
July 30, 2020
I really love the Thunderbolt 3 connection on my laptop. It's a high-speed USB-C connection that supports high speed data transfers and charging too. Don't be confused. USB-C is a physical connector and not a protocol. Gizmodo has a post that gives good background information about Thunderbolt 3 and how Thunderbolt 4 is different from other implementations. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Thunderbolt 4 will also include the USB 4 standard. There are greater capabilities for Thunderbolt 4 even though the data transfer speed (40 Gbps) is the same as Thunderbolt 3.
There are specific requirements for Thunderbolt 4 devices such as support for 2 4K displays, charging at 100W capacity, protection against direct memory attacks, etc. The USB-C connector will also be preserved and will have backward compatibility to work with Thunderbolt 3 ports.
