Virtual Backgrounds Coming to Google Meet

November 2, 2020

One of the great features of Zoom is the support for virtual backgrounds. Virtual backgrounds allow the user to place an image or video in the background to replace the actual surroundings of the participant. You can "hide" the pile of dirty laundry, messy kitchen or any other unwanted background with a more pleasant scene such as a pool at a resort.

Zoom competitors are trying to catch up with their own virtual background support. Some merely allow you to blur your background while others allow you to utilize images just like Zoom. Review Geek reported that Google Meet is the next service to provide support for virtual backgrounds. Like the others, you can use your own photo to replace your background. You won't need to install any additional software to get virtual background support, but you will need to use the Chrome browser or ChromeOS. As the post noted, "The feature is out right now for Google Workspaces on Rapid Release domains. It'll arrive on November 6 for Scheduled Release domains. Education users starting a Meet room can't use the virtual backgrounds, unfortunately."
