Windows 7 May 2019 Update and Sophos – Not So Good Together
May 20, 2019
Bleeping Computer reported that your computer may hang on boot after installing the May 2019 Patch Tuesday update on a machine running Sophos software. The computer could hang on the update screen showing the “Configuring 30%” message. The antivirus company, Sophos, stated that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users of their Sophos Endpoint Security and Control and Sophos Central Endpoint Standard/Advanced will find their computer hanging at the configuring updates screen while installing the updates. The initial reports indicate that the problem is related to KB4499164 (Monthly Rollup) and KB4499165 (Security-only update).
The current workaround is to uninstall the update in Safe Mode, which will allow the computer to boot properly. If you have problems removing the update in Safe Mode, you can disable the "Sophos Anti-Virus" Service and then attempt to remove the update after it has been installed.
