You Can’t Stop Recording of Your Video Conference Meeting

While it is a best practice to control recording of your video conference meetings, it is impossible to stop someone from doing it. Zoom is the video conferencing tool of choice for a large number of users. As we teach lawyers on how to use Zoom securely and ethically, we recommend disabling recording to the cloud, only allow local recording and only allowing the host to record. Even with these restrictions, you can't stop a participant from using their phone to record the session or using a separate software application to record.

To further support the caution, Tech Viral has a post that identifies free screen recorders for Windows 10. While the post identifies the applications, it does not go through the details of how to configure and use each one. Not to worry. There is a different post on Tech Viral that details the steps to configure the free VLC media player to record the screen in Windows 10. Instead of configuring your video conference platform to limit recording capabilities, another best practice is to announce your recording policy at the beginning of the meeting. While you can't stop (or know) someone recording the session, at least you can put the participants on notice not to record.
