Maze Ransomware Gang Released Veterans’ Data Stolen From Law Firm

February 25, 2020

It is hard enough suffering with PTSD, as so many veterans do. That situation was complicated recently by the release of a law firm's confidential data .The Military Times reported last week that the Maze ransomware gang has posted VA documents, patient care records, legal fee agreements and privacy consent forms.

So, if you were a veteran, how would it make you feel to know that the world had seen these words denying the veteran's medical claim? "The VA examiner opined that your depression is due to your antisocial personality disorder and alcohol abuse." There was much more of course, all of it no doubt doing further damage to someone in trouble.

Woods and Woods LLC is a law firm in Evansville, Indiana. It is a nationwide disability benefits firm dealing with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs litigation. Because it had backups in place, the firm remained functional but suffered the consequences of the data breach.

As the Military Times noted, it is unclear what information has been provided to clients thus far, including whether clients were notified that some of their very sensitive information had been posted to the internet.

I continue to hope that we will get a federal data breach law with teeth. Not soon, I fear.
