California Based Title Insurance Company Exposed “Millions” of Customers’ Data

According to pymnts.com, First American Title, based in Santa Ana, California, is currently facing a suit over allegations of a data breach affecting millions of customers.

The charges, brought by the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), claim the company violated the state’s cybersecurity regulation. It is alleged that the compromised information includes “bank account numbers, mortgage and tax records, Social Security numbers, wire transaction receipts and drivers’ license images.”

The suit alleges that First American did not follow its own privacy protection policies and security reviews for computer programs containing sensitive customer data were neglected.

In addition, the DFS claims the company did not thoroughly review enough of the exposed documents and severely underestimated the magnitude of the vulnerability.

First American has since denied the allegations and released a statement saying they have conducted a review with an outside forensics team and found a “very limited” number of customers’ data whose information was likely accessed.

A hearing is scheduled for October 26, with a violation penalty of up to $1,000 for each instance of unsecured customer data.
