Millions Haven’t Upgraded From Windows 7: All Support to End in January

September 4, 2019

Even The Norman Transcript in Oklahoma carried a post about the need to upgrade from the Windows 7 operating system. On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will end all support for Windows 7.

That means no more updates, no more patches and no more security fixes. A hacker's field day will begin, just like the one that happened when Microsoft ditched support for Windows XP in 2014 and Windows Vista in 2017. New security problems will be found, but there will no more fixes.

Experts say there are about 1.5 billion active users of all flavors of Microsoft Windows. They also say Windows 7 represents around 36 percent of those Windows computers currently in use, which means somewhere around 540 million computers worldwide will need to be replaced or upgraded.

The time to upgrade has come, and this is especially critical to lawyers who want to stay on the right side of the ethics rules. To be competent with technology and to take reasonable measures to protect confidential data, there is no choice but to move away from Windows 7.

I guarantee that you will see a lot of stories next year about the idiots who failed to upgrade and suffered a breach. Don't make the funny papers – upgrade now!
