Meet Iris, the Two-Year-Old Black Lab Electronic Evidence Technician

April 8, 2021

The Kenosha Police Department has added a new member to its electronic evidence team. As reported by Kenosha News, a two-year-old English Labrador Retriever named Iris joined the team in March as an electronic detection K9.

Iris will be tasked with locating electronic devices which can be small and difficult to locate. These dogs are trained to help find devices such as phones, USBs, or microSD cards. They locate these devices by smelling for a specific chemical that is used in circuit board production. The department requested the help of an evidence K9 after they learned the dogs were especially useful in locating hidden electronic evidence during the execution of a search warrant.

When Iris is not assisting in the field, she will be with investigators at the sensitive crimes unit assisting with overall office morale. There are also plans for Iris to travel to child advocacy centers, where children suspected of abuse are interviewed. The department’s hope is that this will make the kids feel more at ease.
