Widespread Document Inaccessibility Experienced by Multiple New Jersey Agencies

January 6, 2022

Recently Nicholas Katzban of NorthJersey.com reported on a data outage a number of state agencies were experiencing due to an apparent cyber breach at a major state contractor.

The vendor, R.R. Donnelly, is an Illinois based firm that provides a number of services including assisting organizations with communications management, statements and notices, data analytics/management and commercial printing services, among other things.

The New Jersey office of Homeland Security and Preparedness announced on December 28th that because of the breach multiple state agencies would be unable to access or print official documents, including checks and motor vehicle records. The statement indicated that this stoppage would only be temporary, but would likely go on for days. In dealing with the incident, R.R Donnelly has retained digital forensics experts to investigate and assist in remediating the matter. Law enforcement has also reportedly been contacted and is conducting their own investigation.
