US DOT Suffers Data Breach

May 18, 2023

Jared Gans of the TheHill.com recently reported on a data breach of the Transportation Department’s transit benefit program.

According to the report, the incident may have exposed data for thousands of federal government employees. Those affected likely even included congressional employees. The breach is being forensically investigated by the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) with assistance from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Preliminary findings indicate that certain administrative systems used for functions like the TRANServe program were affected, but transportation safety systems remain unaffected. The breach potentially impacted around 237,000 current and former government employees.  Data included in the leak likely includes details such as names, work email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, SmarTrip card numbers, and TRANServe card numbers.

Access to relevant systems has been suspended while the issue is being investigated and resolved.
