Can You Trust Your VPN?

June 6, 2018

Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are a must have technology for remotely accessing data in a secure fashion. How do you know if your VPN really is protecting your data transmission? Can you trust your VPN implementation? The short answer is you don't really know, but can take some measures to be as secure as possible. No software is immune to vulnerabilities. Make sure you choose a VPN provider that quickly responds to vulnerabilities and fixes them in a rapid fashion. Do your research and select a company that minimizes the amount of data it collects. A study by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation found that of 283 VPN Android apps examined, 38% showed indications of being infected with some form of malware. Not a good thing.

You can take some steps to improve your security posture while using a VPN.

  1. Carefully read your VPN's privacy policy and ask customer support if you have any questions or if something seems amiss.
  2. Make sure you have antivirus software installed on your device.
  3. Seek out objective third-parties that test and review VPNs.

There is no perfect VPN, but using a VPN is better than not using one.
