Three iOS Settings to Investigate

August 9, 2017

If you are an iOS user (iPhone, iPod & iPad), there are three settings that you should investigate. The first setting is Wi-Fi Assist. The setting uses your data plan to supplement a crappy Wi-Fi connection. If you are cheap and don't want to eat data plan volume, you want to turn off the feature. Go to Settings>Cellular and disable it if you don't want to use your data plan when the Wi-Fi is not reliable. The second setting is Background App Refresh. With iOS 11, you can select how to update your apps in the background. There are three choices.

  1. Off
  2. Wi-Fi
  3. Wi-Fi & Mobile Data

So if you are really concerned about using your data plan for something useful instead of streaming YouTube videos, turn off the Mobile Data option. The last setting is Location Data. A lot of apps (more than you know) want to access location information even though there is no rationale argument as to why they should. Does a recipe app really need to know where you are? Go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services to see which apps you want to allow access to your actual location.
