How to Factory Reset a LG Smart TV
January 9, 2017
Ransomware doesn't just attack computers and mobile devices. Even smart TVs are susceptible to a ransomware infection. Graham Cluley reported that a software engineer experienced an infection of his new LG TV after a family member installed an app to watch a movie. The obvious solution is to factory reset the television, but how do you do that? LG wouldn't disclose the procedure to perform the factory reset. The ransom was $500 and LG recommended bringing the TV to a LG service professional, which would have cost $300. LG finally disclosed the factory reset procedure.
"With the TV powered off, place one finger on the settings symbol then another finger on the channel down symbol. Remove finger from settings, then from channel down, and navigate using volume keys to the wipe data/ factory reset option."
Yet again, another lesson in safe computing and only installing software from known reputable sources.
