Apple iMessage Exposes Data

October 13, 2016

Apple has always been a consumer focused company before addressing business user needs. As a result, security seems to be an afterthought. To be fair, Apple has done a much better job addressing security issues over the last several years than it did in the early iPhone days. However, there are reports of browser privacy concerns with the release of iOS 10 and data exposure with iMessage. According to Softpedia, the way Apple implements link previews is insecure and exposes an iMessage user's IP address, OS version and device details. "When the user opens iMessage to see the message, even if he never clicks the link and accesses it, iMessage would connect to the URL automatically, and retrieve the necessary preview data." The bad news…there is no way to turn off the link preview function.
