Apple Fixed iOS 10 Update Problem
September 15, 2016
Twitter lit up when users trying to upgrade to iOS 10 ended up with very expensive electronic "bricks." Apparently, Apple quickly fixed the problem, but the experience is illustrative of how to properly update an iOS device. The first lesson is don't drink the Kool Aid the minute it's available. Wait at least a day or two before you update to see if there are any initial problems, which was the case here. The second lesson is don't do over-the-air updates. Connect your device to computer, perform a backup to include all the apps and then update over the wire. That way if you end up with a "brick" (I've experienced three such events), it's a very easy process to reset the device and then reload your backup data and apps.
