OpenOffice Days are Numbered
September 6, 2016
OpenOffice is a free open source alternative to Microsoft Office. The problem is that very few developers are continuing to work on OpenOffice. Many developers have jumped ship and are working on LibreOffice instead, another free open source office suite. There have been very few updates for OpenOffice and a security vulnerability only just got fixed. Apparently, the vulnerability was reported to the OpenOffice team just as version 4.1.2 was being released. Developers completed a fix in March, but "we were sitting on the fix because we didn't want to give anyone ideas when they saw it applied to the source code unless there was a release in the works." The open source community is justifiably concerned when a fix is not released as soon as it is available. If you are a big fan of open source products, I suggest you follow the crowd and abandon OpenOffice for LibreOffice.
