Employees are a Major Source of Sharing Company Information to Outsiders

June 8, 2016

I'm sure you've heard of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), but what about BYOC? Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) is where employees are using cloud file sharing services to send company data outside of the corporate walls. Sometimes this is just to allow access to the data from their home computers. According to a recent survey, some 69 percent of employees admit to sharing sensitive information outside of the organization. In addition, 40 percent of employees admit to retaining access to sensitive data after they leave the employment of the company.

Bitdefender has some good suggestions for mitigating human errors for better data security.

  1. Restrict access to sensitive data
  2. Cybersecurity education
  3. Technology

At the end of the day, you need to be aware of how data can leave your environment. I call BYOD Bring Your Own Disaster and BYOC Bring Your Own Catastrophe.
