Running Old Software Makes You Vulnerable to Ransomware

March 30, 2016

A March 25th advisory from the FBI asked for help in combating specific ransomware known as MSIL/Samas.A that is targeting businesses. The plea asked recipients to immediately contact the FBI's CYWATCH cyber center if they find evidence that they have been attacked or have other information that might help in its investigation. MSIL/Samas.A is particularly nasty as it encrypts data across an entire network and not just one computer. It targets servers running out-of-date versions of JBOSS, a type of business software. Yet again, another reason not to be running old software.
